More than 100 drivers and pedestrians were cited in July as part of a focused effort by Reno police to improve pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas.

The Reno Police Department conducted Pedestrian Safety Operations throughout July, supported by a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

Eight officers were assigned to enforce pedestrian safety laws in downtown safety zones and other areas with high pedestrian traffic.

During the operations, officers issued 103 traffic citations and gave 28 warnings. Enforcement targeted both drivers and pedestrians who were reportedly violating laws designed to enhance pedestrian safety.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian bridges and to follow all traffic signs and signals.

When sidewalks are not available, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

Drivers must yield to pedestrians and are prohibited from passing cars that have stopped to allow pedestrians to cross.

A representative from the department advised,  “Look Up, Look Out,”  as a general safety reminder for everyone sharing the road.

The Reno Police Department, in coordination with the Nevada Department of Public Safety and the Office of Traffic Safety, encourages both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and follow the rules of the road to protect all users.
