The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County is helping families maintain access to food resources by donating 3,000 adult two-ride bus passes to the Washoe County School District.
The donation comes as many households in the area face challenges due to depleted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The bus passes will allow families in need to reach food pantries, community meal sites, and other essential services.
“Transportation should never be a barrier to meeting basic needs,” said Alexis Hill, Chair of the Washoe County Board of Commissioners and RTC Board of Commissioners. “These passes will help families reach food banks and support programs. This is what it means to take care of one another.”
The Washoe County School District will distribute the passes to families identified as needing transportation assistance.
“This collaboration is about connecting people to hope and stability,” said Commissioner Mariluz Garcia. “Access to food shouldn’t depend on whether someone can afford a ride. We’re proud to see RTC stepping up to support families with compassion and action.”
RTC Executive Director Bill Thomas said the effort supports the agency’s mission to provide equitable and reliable transportation for all residents.
“Public transit is more than transportation, it’s a lifeline,” said Thomas. “We’re grateful to our board members and partners for helping us ensure community members in need have access to vital resources.”
