Three registered sex offenders were arrested Tuesday after Lyon County deputies found registration violations during three separate encounters in Dayton, Fernley, and Silver Springs.
The arrests involved Jeffery Gunderson, 60-year-old Keith Duane Carr, and 34-year-old Steven Tyler Dowell. Each was accused of violating Nevada's sex offender registration requirements.
In Dayton, deputies with the Western Command contacted Gunderson about his registration status. During that contact, deputies determined he had not updated required registration information within the time required by Nevada law.
Gunderson was arrested on suspicion of violating Nevada state law and taken to the Lyon County Jail.
A similar issue came up in Fernley, where Northern Command deputies contacted Carr about his registration status. Deputies determined Carr was out of compliance because he had not completed a required registration verification.
Carr was arrested on suspicion of violating Nevada State law and transported to the Lyon County Jail.
Dowell's case began differently.
A Central Command deputy stopped a vehicle in Silver Springs after seeing it being driven recklessly through a residential area. During the investigation, the deputy identified Dowell as the driver and learned he was a registered sex offender.
Deputies then reviewed his registration information and determined he had failed to update required information. Dowell was arrested on suspicion of violating Nevada state laws and was also booked on charges of reckless driving and driving without a valid driver's license.
The arrests come after Sheriff Brad Pope directed the Lyon County Sheriff's Office on July 15 to adopt a zero-tolerance policy for violations of Nevada's sex offender registration laws.
The three cases happened in different parts of the county and were uncovered in different ways. Two involved deputies contacting people about their registration status, while Dowell's registration violation was discovered during a traffic stop.
The sheriff's office says its Sex Offender Task Force and patrol personnel will continue working together to enforce the registration requirements under NRS Chapter 179D.
