WRITE A BRIEF (TWO TO THREE SENTENCES) SUMMARY OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD ENABLE YOU TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THIS OFFICE:

Have served over 23 years as the Sheriff of Carson City. Additional qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, and two Associates Degrees, including Police Science and Criminal Justice. Further background includes 20 years with the United States Air Force in law enforcement capacity, retiring in 1998 from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and 4 years with the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY IF ELECTED?

Proactive enforcement efforts are the hallmark of my administration, including professional law enforcement service delivery, engagement throughout the community, and the use of technology-based tools, all of which produce positive results. Drug abuse and gang violence remain a top priority in keeping our community safe. Collaboration among enforcement teams at the local, state, and federal levels will continue, with overlapping efficient investigations that strengthen community safety. Likewise, I will continue our focus on suicide and overdose prevention, traffic injuries and fatalities, and crisis management through highly specialized units that I formed specifically to target these challenges, both in the community and the region at large. Another specialized unit, the School Resource Officer Program, assigns officers directly to our schools. In addition to building rapport with students, an officer on campus can provide firsthand information to guide the department’s response if a threat is reported. This specialized unit is vital to the school district and our community partners in providing safe and comfortable educational and recreational environments for children, staff, and the public. While community outreach targeting fraud and scam losses in the community has long been emphasized, redoubling our efforts through education and prevention is essential. My administration’s most basic philosophy is to be an active participant in the community. What this means to you is that we are engaged in our community and are driven to keep you informed about your home, neighborhood, work, and everything that is taking place around you in Carson City. In return, we ask that you provide us with information. Together, we can ensure Carson City continues to offer its residents a thriving, secure environment in which to live and raise our children.

IN JUST A FEW SENTENCES: WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING PUBLIC SAFETY IN CARSON, AND HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?

The negative impacts of drug abuse, gang violence, fraudulent scams, and traffic fatalities remain a top priority. The strategic use of specialized enforcement units assigned to these areas target enforcement, education, and prevention methods through community outreach awareness and prevention efforts. Drug overdose and suicides have risen during the current year and outreach collaborative efforts targeting proactive behavioral health responses are being enhanced to prevent such losses.
