The Reno Fire Department wants to remind people of safety tips for the river, for grilling, and fire pits.
River Safety:Â
Recent warm weather has caused the water levels to rise, making the current in the Truckee River stronger and faster than usual. This has created a dangerous situation for anyone attempting to swim in the river, even for experienced swimmers and kayakers. Â
* Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a properly fitting, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Cold water and strong currents can be dangerous even for strong swimmers. Â
* Dress Appropriately: Wear a wetsuit or drysuit to protect against hypothermia. Cold water can quickly lower body temperature, leading to a loss of purposeful muscle control and the inability to self-rescue.Â
* Check River Conditions: Before heading out, check the latest river conditions, including water levels and flow rates. Â
* Go with a Group: Never go alone. Rafting with a group increases safety. Make sure everyone in the group is aware of the plan and the potential dangers. Â
* Avoid Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol before or during river activities. It impairs judgment and reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents. Â
Grill Safety:Â
An outdoor grill can easily cause fire and damage or destroy your property, or even worse threaten the lives of the people you love. The National Fire Protection Association reports that half of all injuries from grills are thermal burns. The Reno Fire Department offers the following Safety tips:Â
* Consider the location of your grill. Try to place it as far from the house and dry vegetation as possible, at least 10 feet. The grill should be clear from deck railings and overhanging branches.Â
* Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area.Â
* Remove grease or fat build up from the trays below the grill.Â
* Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.Â
* Before you dispose of coals or ash, be sure to pour water over them until the fire is completely out. Dispose of ashes in a metal container.Â
* Never use a gas or charcoal grill inside.Â
Fire Pits and Outdoor Fireplaces:Â
Roasting marshmallows around the fire pit is great. Reno Fire reminds you to do it safely not only this weekend, but throughout summer:Â
* When setting up a fire pit, make sure it is at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface, and 25 feet from dry vegetation that could cause a fire to spread. Â
* The fire must remain under 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. Â
* Use a spark arrester to avoid embers from floating to neighboring properties and only burn clean firewood. Â
* Trash and treated lumber create many embers and can be toxic.Â
* Before you light the fire, be sure to check the weather forecast. Avoid burning if it is windy. Â
