UPDATE, November 2021:

The Sun Valley man convicted in the 2019 shooting death of a Sparks man was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month.

20-year-old Giovanni Gonzales-Mariscal will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.

He was convicted of the first-degree murder of Robert DeCoite after a two-week jury trial in July.

The Washoe County DA's office says Gonzales-Mariscal was also sentenced to an additional maximum term of 8 to 20 years for the deadly weapon enhancement. Based on the sentence received, the DA says he must serve a minimum of 28 years in prison before parole eligibility begins.

UPDATE, July 2021:

A Sun Valley man was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon after a two-week jury trial that concluded on Thursday afternoon.

20-year-old Giovanni Gonzales-Mariscal was found responsible for the December 2019 shooting death of 20-year-old Robert DeCoite of Sparks.

The shooting happened after a confrontation at Lazy 5 Regional Park in Spanish Springs on December 2, 2019.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to investigate and quickly identified Gonzales-Mariscal as a suspect.

Evidence determined he fired 13 shots and hit two unoccupied cars and a home during the shooting.

Before he was found, he fled to Mexico. He was found and extradited back to Washoe County in September 2020 with the help of federal agencies, including the US Marshals Service.

Gonzales-Mariscal will be sentenced on October 18. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.


UPDATE, October 2020:

The murder suspect in last year's Lazy 5 deadly shooting is now in Washoe County Jail after he was arrested in Jalisco, Mexico last month. 

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies previously identified 19-year-old Giovanni Gonzales-Mariscal as the prime suspect in the death of 20-year-old Robert Decoite Jr. of Sparks about two months after Decoite was fatally shot at a park in Spanish Springs on Dec. 2, 2019.

Gonzales-Mariscal was flown back to the United States from Mexico on September 16, 2020 to face charges in this case.

Gonzales-Mariscal was taken first to California then extradited to Nevada where he now faces one charge of open murder.


UPDATE: February 2020:

Washoe County Deputies say the family of a man shot and killed in December is now offering a $5,500 reward for information after the homicide at Lazy 5 Regional Park. 

Deputies are still looking for the suspect, 18-year-old Giovanni Gonzales-Mariscal. 

The family’s reward is separate from the $2,500 reward offered by Secret Witness for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in this case.

The victim, 20-year-old Robert Decoite Jr. of Sparks died at the park on December 2, 2019. 

No one was hurt in the shooting.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says it has identified a suspect in connection last month's homicide near the Spanish Springs Library at Lazy 5 Regional Park.

Detectives say they have identified 18-year-old Giovanni Gonzales-Mariscal of Sun Valley as a suspect in the December 2, 2019 shooting.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office said 20-year-old Robert Decoite of Sparks was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Police said there were multiple people at the park who may have witnessed what happened - and investigators are hoping to use these potential witnesses as sources to find any suspects.

* Make a plan with your family, and ensure everyone knows what they would do, if they hear shots fired or confronted with an active shooter.

* Look for the two nearest exits anywhere you go, and have an escape path in mind & identify places you could hide.

* Understand the plans for individuals with disabilities or other access and functional needs.
