Original Story (1/1/25):

One man is dead after shooting involving Carson City Sheriff's deputies after midnight on New Year's Day.

The Sheriff's Office says deputies were responding to a verbal domestic dispute in rural southwestern Carson City on Clear Creek Road. When they arrived, they learned that the suspect had left the area, but had threatened to shoot at law enforcement. The office says he returned just before midnight, and "there was an immediate exchange of gunfire" before the suspect barricaded himself inside his pickup truck.

Deputies say they tried negotiating with the suspect for almost 30 minutes, but he refused to follow law enforcement instructions. Just after midnight, the sheriff says he exited his truck with a handgun, when a second shootout took place and the suspect died.

No law enforcement officers were hurt, but five deputies and two sergeants are now on standard administrative leave following the shooting.

The sheriff has not yet released the names of the suspect or deputies involved in the shootout.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the initial shooting, including the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Washoe Tribal Police, Carson City Fire Department, and Tactical Paramedics.

Nevada State Police are investigating the shooting.
