Almost three years ago, the Caldor Fire erupted, burning more than 220,000 acres.
"It was a really dramatic evacuation situation. Fire was very unpredictable, going every which way, and it was at that time that our staff and our emergency management realized we needed to a better way to do this," said City of Reno Vice Mayor Naomi Duerr, Chair of Regional Animal Services Advisory Board.
Now, to this very day, Washoe County Regional Animal Services feels they found an easier way to manage evacuations.
WCRAS unveiled two brand new emergency evacuation trailers on Tuesday.
"So, they are really designed to be self-contained. We can really take them wherever we need to take them and set up and have a place for our staff to be as well as the animals we're caring for and all of the supplies necessary," said Shyanne Schull, Director of WCRAS.
Before, the animal services would have to put up tents and crates in evacuation centers and that takes a lot of time and resources.
They say these trailers only need about five minutes to get going.
The trailers can fit up to 22 animals, but they have space for bigger animals if need be.Â
Another benefit is that these trailers are much easier to clean.
The trailers are stocked with hot and cold water, as well as heating and air conditioning to keep the animals comfortable.
During evacuations, sometimes the centers don't allow for pets, but these trailers help to break down that barrier.Â
"It's up to the facility owner, so if the owner says no pets, how are we going to overcome to reduce the stress of the pet and the owner of that separation? And so these trailers allow us to do that," said Kelly Echeverria, Emergency Management Administrator for Washoe County.
The Department of Homeland Security granted the funding to the WRCAS for the trailers.
While they can help Washoe County, the reach spreads all across the silver state.
"We now have two assets and so one of them is shareable, and so if we're engaged in response, and so our partners in Carson, Douglas, Storey, Lyon, anywhere throughout the state really we're able to send out one trailer to anyone that might need it,"Â Echeverria said.
Echeverria says that if you have an evacuation plan for you and your pet, that will make their life a lot easier.
