Digital signs are grabbing people's attention, but for some, it's not in a good way.
The Reno City Council heard from both sides on Tuesday about what they should do with digital signs popping up around town.
Some say the signs are good for getting information out, while some opponents say the signs are a nuisance.
"I understand people who have these signs are putting in an investment but they're telling other businesses that in order to compete, you have to now have digital signs. This leads to proliferation, so let’s stop that from happening now,” says Mark Wray, Scenic Nevada.
The Reno City Council discussed creating an ordinance and got feedback on how they should regulate the size, number, illumination, and location of digital signs.
In the last couple years, more digital signs have come about like those on casinos, and at the University of Nevada campus. Some students we talked to seemed to like that particular sign, but said others need to be regulated in town.
"I do think informative signs should remain, as far as other distractions, I mean, we have some crazy drivers out there already, we don't need anymore distractions make them any crazier,” says Daniela Ruiz of Reno.
The City plans to take further action on this issue after receiving feedback.
Some residents who turned out today had hoped to also attend the Washoe County meeting on digital billboards. That meeting has been postponed until September 8th.
