Time to Prepare Outdoor Sprinklers for Cold

You know, it's that time of year again. Fall is here. Winter is just around the corner, and landscaping companies are preparing your property for the cold.

"You know it's getting cold already," said Cesar Marin, an irrigation tech with Signature Landscapes. "It's Halloween, and it gets cold right after that."

The most important thing is to make sure your sprinklers are turned off.

"Otherwise, it could be pretty costly if it's not done properly," he said.

We're talking hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

"Pipes will burst open," he said. "If it's close to your house, the basement could flood. All kinds of nasty stuff."

Marin has been winterizing properties for signature landscaping practically non-stop for the last couple of weeks.

"We're doing 20, 25 houses a day. So it's a lot."

The process is pretty simple. Marin tells me it only takes five minutes to do. But if you do it yourself, make sure you're turning off correct valve-- or you could turn off the water to your house.

"You don't want to shut off the wrong one, and you end up with no water in your house," he said.

If you can, try to cover the exterior pipes to prevent additional freezing. One final step, turn off the sprinkler timer, most homes have them.

"It's the smart thing to just get it done," said Marin. "Get it out of the way. A lot of people think it's early because it's warm in the day. But it's cold at night. So this is the time do it."
