Buying a Car During a Pandemic

The doors at Dolan Toyota are still open these days, but the process of buying a car has changed over the last month and a half. Sales at the dealership are now done by appointment, and a lot of customers are going completely contactless.

"I think it's fast forwarded the business a whole bunch in the last six weeks," said Ryan Dolan, CEO of Dolan Auto Group. "Anything from signing on DocuSign on a car, which we didn't have before, we can do almost anything via the internet or via your phone. If you want to buy a car, we'll deliver it to your home, we'll disinfect it, we'll do all that. "You can do everything non-contact. I never thought I'd say that about buying a car, but yes, we are there, and we're doing everything in our power to make that happen."

He says sales are down more than half, but they're starting to see a bit of an uptick, and there are some good deals to be had these days.

"It's a wonderful time to buy," Dolan said. "The manufacturers have great rebates and incentives to move some of the new cars that may have stacked up during the last six weeks. Some states have not been selling anything. The used car market is a little weird right now because the new car market has so many incentives and rebates, so it's a really good time to come out and buy."

Some customers that know exactly what they want don't even test drive the new car. Others get the vehicles delivered to their home for a test drive.

"Right now we're tailoring the buying experience to the customer, because everyone is a little different right now," Dolan said. "So we're doing whatever they wan; how they want to buy is how we'll sell them the car."

As of now, they haven't had to lay anyone off.

"That's been the best news," Dolan said. "We're doing everything in our power to not have to have it come to that."
