So far four businesses have confirmed they are separating from Reno Public Market after only being open nearly a year and a half.
Those businesses are Wandering Wyld, Fuego Street Tacos, A La Parilla, and Brazilian Gourmet.
While some of the businesses are still open and planning to leave soon, the owner of Fuego Street Tacos, Sarah Reynosa, says she has already closed her doors due to Reno Public Market being too costly for her.
"The reason why we are failing or not doing well is because of high cost of rent," she said. "20% to have to pay towards them in addition to credit card transactions, in addition to utilities, cleaning costs. It's just so much to be in here."
Reynosa said since she opened her doors last year in January, they have not been able to make any profit.
In addition to all the costs she tells us that after taxes, pay roll, and cost of food she could no longer continue to afford staying in RPM.
According to Reynosa, the property managers have not been willing to renegotiate their agreement.
"All they said was 'Can't you raise the cost of your food?' And we're already so high when it comes to community with the additional fees that we just can't afford to do that," she said.
Reynosa says regardless of her business no longer being able to afford to stay, Reno Public Market says she will still be financially responsible for breaking her agreement.
"They were not okay with it, and they have told us they were going to charge us for breaking the, not the lease, but the licensing agreement early," she tells us.
We reached out to the Reno Public Market for comment. They sent us a statement saying in part, "While a tenant choosing to leave is never our desired outcome, we understand that not every business is going to be a fit and we respect their decisions as business owners."
The owner of Junkee Clothing Exchange released a statement on their Instagram saying in part, "Since our move to the market, Junkee has been doing better than ever... Being inside Reno Public Market has brought us more parking, a strong sense of community, and a safe place for my staff and customers."
