11/22/24, 9:45 P.M. UPDATE

More than 500 people are without power across northern Nevada Friday night according to NV Energy's outage map.

The cause for most of the outages is under investigation according to NV Energy, but a car crash west of Carson City is causing an outage for six people, while a tree on the line is causing an outage for three in south Reno.

Right now, three people are confirmed as being without power due to a PSOM. Those customers are expected to have power back by 9 a.m. on Saturday.

There is no estimated time for power to be restored for the majority of those affected by outages at this time.

The cause for the Reno-Sparks outages is not known at this time according to the NV Energy website.

Meanwhile, 16 people are without power in the Carson/Genoa area where NV Energy warned of PSOM outages.

Of those 16, NV Energy's outage map confirms three are the result of a PSOM, while data is unavailable on 12 of the customers affected and the cause of another outage is under investigation.

A planned power outage is currently underway for portions of Carson/Genoa.

NV Energy says, "due to the changing weather conditions, we had to begin the outage earlier than expected. We apologize for the disruptions."

Previously NV Energy said that if this outage would occur, it would last until 7 p.m. which includes time to patrol the area before re-energization, if there's no damage found on patrol.

NOVEMBER 21:

NV Energy has ended its planned outages for parts of Genoa and Jacks Valley but warns Genoa may need to undergo another outage on Friday.

NV Energy says the planned outages ended Thursday for Genoa North, Clear Creek and Jacks Valley and customers were back on by about 8:30 a.m.

While patrolling, utility crews found broken cross arm that had to be fixed before all customers could be fully re-energized.

Due to the high winds forecast for Friday, NV Energy says the Genoa North zone will need to re-enter a PSOM watch for a potential outage. This is a small group of customers.

If an outage does occur, it would run from approximately 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., which includes time to patrol the area before re-energization, if there's no damage found on patrol.

11/20/24, 7:45 P.M. UPDATE

Most NV Energy customers affected by PSOM outages throughout Wednesday have had their power restored.

In a release, the power company said about 42 customers in the Genoa North, Clear Creek, and Jacks Valley area will remain without power until Thursday morning due to continued high winds.

Customers in the Virginia City Highlands, Washoe Valley, Southwest Reno, and Galena zones have had their power restored.

The Carson City School District has announced that all schools in the district will be open on Thursday.

In a release, the district said this includes all school sites including Bordewich Bray and Carson Middle School.

11/20/24, 3 P.M. UPDATE

NV Energy is reporting that teams have begun patrols of their equipment following hurricane-level winds Wednesday morning that forced power shutoffs.

Pending the results of those patrols, many customers could see their power restored by Wednesday night, the utility company said in a release.

If damage is found, customers could remain without power until Thursday.

If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and extremely dangerous and report it immediately by calling 911.

11/20/24, 1:15 P.M. UPDATE

NV Energy has pro-actively shut off power to more than 10,000 customers across Northern Nevada for 'wildfire mitigation'.

Most of the outages started around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday across Genoa North, South Carson City - Clear Creek, South Carson City - Jacks Valley, Virginia City Highlands, Galena, Washoe Valley and Southwest Reno.

Customers in Verdi remain in a WARNING status. NV Energy warns it may need to de-energize that area if certain conditions are met but they remain in power at this time.

There's no estimated time on restoration, for most of the outages.

At one point, more than 15,000 customers had their power shut off.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

WCSD says all classes and events at Pleasant Valley, Huffaker and Roy Gomm Elementary schools will be canceled for Wednesday, November 20, and there will be no before - or after school activities.

Meanwhile, NV Energy has imposed a planned Power Outage at four school sites in Carson City. School will be closed/canceled for the entire day at Bordewich Bray Elementary, Carson Middle, the District Office and Student Support Services.

All employees and students who report to these specific school sites should remain home. No student activities, afterschool programs or practices will occur at only these schools. All other school sites will have power and the school day will remain unchanged.

It recently rained/snowed, why is NV Energy still issuing a PSOM?

The utility says, "the recent precipitation received in northern Nevada is no match for the high winds forecasted for Wednesday. The prefrontal winds will dry and cure fuels to critical levels erasing any relief the previous moisture provided. Safety is NV Energy’s highest priority. Proactive outages are a key measure of defense to help protect the community and environment from wildfires."

Looking at current weather patterns, NV Energy is issuing a Public Safety Outage Management Watch in the area.

The PSOM Watch is in effect for the following locations:

Genoa North

South Carson City – Clear Creek

South Carson City - Jacks Valley

Virginia City Highlands

Verdi

Galena

Washoe Valley

Southwest Reno

A proactive outage is possible on Wednesday starting at 6:00 a.m. and lasting until 12:00 noon.

The timeframe of the potential outage takes into account the duration of the weather predicted to come through the area, and the time it would take NV Energy crews to inspect lines before restoring power.

During a PSOM proactive outage, lines are de-energized in high-risk zones to protect the area from wildfires.
