The Washoe County School District's Zoning Advisory Committee meeting was held on Thursday.

They discussed proposed enrollment zone adjustments for multiple schools for both the 2027-2028 and 2028-2029 school years.

Option 1A

They approved the 2027-2028 plan and chose option 1A, which can be seen above.

This option does not affect zoning boundaries for middle or high schools.

The 2028-2029 plan was put up for discussion tonight, but the item was closed for further discussion at a later date.

The approval of the first item will now be sent to the Washoe County School Board of Trustees to be finalized or sent back to the committee for further discussion.

Tami Zimmerman, the Chief Facilities Management Officer for the Washoe County School District, says, "I hope that if they do make a decision from the zoning advisory committee, and ultimately the board of trustees approves, that it then creates that community connectedness for these students in their community closest to where they live."

For Bernice Mathews, they are adding about six classrooms to the school. This brings in more students from Kate Smith and the kids who are currently in mobiles for class.

But the goal is to provide capacity and modernization for their educational specifications.

This all stems from the facility modernization plan that was approved by the Board of Trustees back in December of 2023.

Zimmerman goes on to say, "Zoning is important to get in front of because of all these modernization projects and new construction projects, as well as the repurposing of our schools through facility modernization, and we want to get in front of it so that students and families know what schools they're going to attend in advance for the school year."
