Run For Tuna

The 15th Annual Run on Tuna begins September 1 and runs through September 30, aiming to support the Food Bank of Northern Nevada during Hunger Action Month.

The campaign has collected and donated more than 265,000 cans of tuna. Organizers Michelle Sturge and De De Rosene said they are confident this year’s effort will surpass the 10,000-can goal and push the overall total closer to 300,000 cans.

Jocelyn Lantrip, marketing director for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, said the donations are vital for local families. “The generosity behind this effort continues to inspire us. With more than 160,000 people turning to us each month, the need is still tremendous, and donations of protein like tuna have a powerful impact on the families we serve,” she said.

Run on Tuna encourages financial contributions, which organizers use to purchase cans of tuna, though actual cans are also accepted.

Donations can be made via Venmo to De De Rosene (@Diane-Rosene) or Michelle Sturge (@Michelle-Sturge), through the Facebook Run on Tuna fundraiser page, or by delivering cans.

Financial contributions can also be made directly at Chase International, located at 985 Damonte Ranch Parkway, Unit 110, in Reno, during business hours.

Businesses or organizations can also host their own Run on Tuna collection.

Tuna is a key item for the Food Bank because it is high in protein, has a long shelf life, and meets ongoing community needs.

Hunger Action Month, observed nationwide in September, encourages communities to take an active role in ending hunger, with food banks across the country participating in similar campaigns.
