Bishop Manogue High School

The president of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has officially resigned from his position.

In a release from the institution on Friday, it was revealed that Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg and the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School Board of Directors have accepted Matt Schambari’s resignation.

Schambari initially placed himself on administrative leave in March.

Bishop Mueggenborg has appointed Brother Christopher Hall, the new Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Reno, to act as Bishop Manogue’s Supervisor.

His term will start on July 1st.

Hall’s duties will include all those of the president. In addition, he will lead the search committee for hiring the next Bishop Manogue president.

When he placed himself on leave Schambari requested the Diocese of Reno conduct an independent, third-party investigation following allegations of wrongful termination of the Bishop Manogue girls’ basketball coach.

The investigation began in April and is ongoing. The Diocese of Reno awaits the results of the investigation.

March 25th Update

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School President Matt Schambari has voluntarily placed himself on unpaid administrative leave closely following the firing of the school’s girls basketball coach, Sara Schopper-Ramirez.

Ramirez claims that she was let go for racially-motivated reasons. In an audio clip leaked online, which she claims is a recording of a conversation between her and the school’s president, a male voice instructs her not to make it look like Bishop Manogue is “paying to bring in these brown kids that are winning us basketball games.”

Ramirez says she put players on the court based solely on skill, and it did result in some minority players getting more time, for which she believes Schambari fired her.

In Schambari’s letter requesting unpaid administrative leave, he writes, “I can unequivocally say that I have never advocated for discrimination in any form or function, and I have devoted my tenure as president to expanding access for underrepresented populations at Bishop Manogue. It’s a record of achievement I am proud to be associated with.”

In the letter, Schambari does not directly refer to Ramirez’s firing as the cause for his leave, but says he supports an independent investigation of “this matter.”

“Other than being guilty of using a very poor choice of words, which I profoundly regret, I have always tried to conduct myself in full service to the entire student body and our school community,” he writes.
